The AppleCD SC is Apple’s new Compact Disc — Read Only Memory (CD-ROM) drive. In AppleCD SC, CD stands for CD-ROM drive and SC is short for SCSI interface.
With the AppleCD SC connected to a Macintosh or Apple II, a user is capable of exploring CD-ROM titles containing an excess of 550 megabytes of digital data, including text, graphics, audio and image information. That is equivalent to 700 (800K) floppy disks, 2,000 high resolution images, or 270,000 pages of typewritten text.
Based on compact audio disc technology, CD-ROM discs share identical physical properties with CD audio discs. Both compact discs are 4.72 inches in diameter and information is encoded in a 3 mile spiral track.
CD-ROM offers the following exciting implications for publishing:
• Inexpensive distribution of information.
• Immediate access to huge amounts of
stored data.
• Convenience and durability.
• Easy cross-referencing of information.
The value of the AppleCD SC is enhanced by its ability to play off-the-shelf audio CDs. Included with the drive is the CD Remote Desk Accessory (DA), which allows the Apple IIe, the Apple IIGS and the Macintosh user to listen to audio CDs when not using CD-ROM discs and while working on other software applications. It's both a productive and fun tool.
